Top swimming speed.

Their ability to sustain a faster pace at a higher intensity for longer periods of time.

Inspired by the great Paavo Nurmi, I stood on the boat with my stopwatch in hand ready to monitor their swims and do the maths on their speeds.

Feeling nervous, I knew this session would make or break a lot of them as their bodies were about to be plunged into physiological disarray as:

Oxygen use increases.

Heart rates elevate.

Fuel (muscle glycogen) is burned.

Chemicals build up in the muscles which contribute to exhaustion.

Water is lost and heat accumulates.

Muscles fatigue as the molecular energy of the muscles (adenosine triphosphate) runs low.
